My Atkins Diet Story

aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

@ripperzane More or less you have it exactly right.

There is a bit of initially limiting your carbs more than you need to (20g), but after that Induction phase, you can pretty much eat all the non-starchy vegetables you can until you stop losing weight. Dr. Atkins was a huge believer in vegetables and their phytonutrients, which is funny why he gets a bad name or portrayed an all meat diet.

A simple nutshell (I am sure I will be corrected) is get carbs from vegetables.
This ups your fiber, and is tasty :D
Also, don’t eat nitrates (hot dogs come to mind), as it causes personal body issues. Speaking just for me, when I did this (no hotdogs, eat mostly only chicken and fish), my joint pain is not an issue anymore. Blood preassure got better. Also, I sit in an office (very non busy) and do burpees, or the 100 pushup website. So far down 15 lbs, takin it easy, no rush :D

@jcook287 You are very welcome and big congratulations on your progress in 3 short months. Stories like yours is what keeps me doing these videos.

My name is Jim from Anderson In and I want to thank you. I started Adkins 3 months ago needing to lose 150 lbs. So far I have lost 50. I came to youtube to find suggestions on what to eat and found your stories. Like you said I took certain ideas and a lot of inspiration from you and am continuing to lose weight. At 41 I feel like i got a second chance and am taking it. Thanks Again, Jim Cook

@EmzilyD Actually the only essential macronutrients are fats and proteins — the stuff the body can’t make for itself. There is no phase of the Atkins that is zero carb or zero vegetables, and all the needs of the body can be fulfilled with the healthy foods you are allowed to eat.

6 years later and still doing Atkins, and my annual physicals could not be better. My doctor could not be more pleased with my progress or the results. Low carb certainly does a body good.

  7. EmzilyD says:

Um the atkins diet isn’t actually very good for you cause it’s low carbs and your body needs carbs. What carbs you should eat are complex carbs. Still great job and you look really healthy now

@13Superkitsune Thank you for your kind words!

It seems you are back in control and realize the error of previous time. I know how hard it can be when stuck in certain situations and stay clean. You know the path to follow this time, and even have a better idea of what to watch out for. While we hate to stumble, you could even be more successful this time.

  23. 13Superkitsune says:

Jeez man, you look so different from only the two years! Amazin :)

I started Atkins and after 3 weeks I was full of energy, never really hungry and lost 30 pounds. Thennnnnnnnnnnn I worked at a wedding and I broke, gaining back that weight and much more. Time has flown by surprisingly fast and that was 8 months ago! Totally want to restart Atkins and I hope it goes well :)

  24. bowulf says:

@MrChuck650 Thanks. I know you can relate to the frustration or feeling of not leaving on your own terms that I had. I am glad that I had the opportunity to right that past, and proving to your kids that their 30-something dad could still hang with the best never hurts either.

Best of luck with getting in compliance, and thank you for your service!

  25. MrChuck650 says:

Dude your awsome! I got kicked out for being fat 10 years ago went over seas as a contractor three times and am now trying to get back in complience with AR 600-9 so I can come back in. Then go maintence warrant. Thanks for the motivation and inspiration.
