Atkins Diet & Exercise: Endurance Athletes & Electrolytes

In this third video of my exercise series, I detail one of the more important questions to those who exercise on the Atkins Diet — how to stay hydrated while exercise. The easy answer is drink water, but on a hot day while sweating that is not always the best answer as one loses key minerals, like Sodium, Potassium, and other electrolytes. Non-low carbers have it easy as they can turn to any readily available Electrolyte replacement drink, like Gatorade or Powerade. Even those that recognize the need for protein like Accelerade, combine with 4x as much carbohydrates than protein. Here is the home-made low carb Gatorade recipe: Artificial Sweetener equivalent of 10 tbs. sugar (5/8 cups or 120 grams) 3/4ths tsp Morton Lite salt (4.2 grams) 1 package of unsweetened Koolade mix for flavor 2 liters Water Commercial Low Carb Electrolyte Replacements: Tablets: Hammer Endurolytes – www.e-caps.com Succeed! John Tesh Trashing On ‘The New Atkins For A New You’ Book

On March 23, 2010, nationally-syndicated radio host John Tesh gave an on-air review of the latest low-carb book called THE NEW ATKINS FOR A NEW YOU by three highly-respected low-carb researchers named Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Jeff Volek, and Dr. Stephen Phinney. Tesh was highly critical of this new version of the Atkins diet because he claims it is unhealthy and a “fad” since it allows for fat to be present in the diet and very few grains or starchy legumes. Popular www.livinlavidalowcarb.com blogger Jimmy Moore answers these false claims against the new Atkins diet with factual, reasoned responses to each of these allegations made by Tesh, a self-admitted fan of the Mediterranean diet. What John Tesh fails to realize is that we are all different and that various approaches work for individuals and it’s up to them to find what will work for their body to make them healthy and fit. And, for some, that will include the new Atkins diet. LISTEN TO JIMMY MOORE’S MARCH 2010 PODCAST INTERVIEW WITH DR. Atkins Diet Recipes: Fauxtatoes

My second cooking show on how to make low carb comfort foods. Fauxtatoes are a great dish to have at Thanksgiving or for those who typically have to fight to get their veggies. A couple of my kids and my wife even make cameo appearances in this video. It’s the least I can do for all the taste testing I make them endure as I try new recipes. My non-low-carbing family members even like this recipe as an alternative to starchy mashed potatoes. Try this recipe; I think it’ll be a hit with you as well! Recipe: 1 Head Cauliflower 2.5 TBS Butter 1/3 cup Heavy Cream 1 Chicken Bouillon cube 1 tsp salt White pepper to taste Directions: * Cook Cauliflower until fork tender. Drain well. * Place cooked cauliflower and other ingredients (crush bouillon cube first) into the food processor. Run on high until consistency of mashed potatoes. You may need to scrape the sides of the bowl a couple times to prevent lumps. My Atkins Diet Story

aka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Ketosis versus Ketoacidosis

Additional contact methods: Twitter: bowulf Blog: www.network-admin.net IM or Skype Contact Me First How to Atkins Diet TV: www.ustream.tv This is the next one in my series of Atkins Diet Misconceptions where I combat all myths and misunderstandings regarding low carbing. Another one of the oft-misunderstood low carb concepts is the whole difference between ketosis and the diabetic condition of ketoacidosis. It should be rather clear what the difference is between the two: * one affects low carbers who are eating very few carbs and have consequently low to normal blood sugar levels * one affects almost strictly Type 1 diabetics who can’t produce any or enough insulin for their hyperglycemia (very high blood sugar) Even though they sound the same and both involve ketones in the blood, they are dramatically different in terms of severity and cause. Here are the amounts I spoke of in the video: Dietary ketosis vs. diabetic hyperketoacidosis Normal state: 0.1 mmol/L Overnight fast: 0.3 mmol/L Ketogenic diet: 1-3 mmol/L 21 day fast: 10 mmol/L Uncontrolled diabetes: more than 25 mmol You can see where the uncontrolled diabetic has nearly 10-20 times the millimoles of ketones in their blood as the ketogenic diet follower. Ketosis is safe natural state for the body to be in. Many hunter and gatherers were in a ketogenic state for most of the winter months. It is simply the body’s reaction to burning fat for fuel, and ketones are the normal by-product of that reaction. Everyone is

Atkins Diet Quick Hits: Induction is not only 20g or less

In the fourth video of the “Atkins Diet Quick Hits” series, I deal with a question I get from new people asking about a certain lower carb food or frankenfood and if it is ok due to its low carb. It is often not on the Acceptable Foods List or filled with ingredients not on the list. This is when I get into the discussion why the first phase of the diet is more than just reduce your carbs to less than 20g per day. Here are the main goals of any Induction phase: 1.) Get into ketosis and see its benefits 2.) Get used to the food selection 3.) Control one’s eating habits and prove that control to yourself 4.) Set stage for future weight loss and ability to detect future problem foods when you readd them later Not following the Induction rules and the Acceptable Foods List erodes the guarantee of your success. Atkins Diet Questions: Loose Skin

** Graphic Display of loose skin around my stomach near the end — Viewers may want to ensure a bag is available ** Today’s episode I deal with the one of the most common questions people ask me after hearing of my 200 pound weight loss. That is, “do you have much problems with loose skin?” In the end, I have to admit that I do have a bit of loose skin (I affectionately & sometime not so affectionately my “SharPei”) around my torso and legs, but it could be much worse. I could have the sheets of skin some dieters (more often low Calorie big losers) have or even worse be my original weight still living in fear of loose skin. There are times that I actually like my stretchmarks as they server as reminders of what might be if I think I can lax up. It also serves as a talking point like my pathetic driver’s license does for people looking for hope, but most days I am just thankful for shirts. There are other things that are claimed to help, but I have not tried. Cocoa Butter and Mederma are both used by pregnant women to ease the appearance of stretchmarks. Additionally, I believe the content of this Diet helps in maintaining the elasticity due to protein and fat being featured. The body does not cannibalize its own resources like on other diets, and many report their skin looks as good and clear as it ever had. Good skin health implies good skin elasticity to respond to the weight loss as well. One final theory about loose skin: www.bodyfatguide.com To summarize the above

These wings are some of the best reasons to go on the Atkins Diet. They are completely legal for all phases of the diet and absolutely delicious. The Diet Coke is a unique ingredient, but it really does the trick. I think by adding the wings to the simmering sauce, the collagen helps thicken the sauce as well. Ingredients 3 pounds chicken wings, separated at joints, tips discarded 1 cup Louisiana-style hot sauce (Franks Hot Sauce recommended) www.amazon.com 1 can Diet Coke with Splenda 1 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste 1 tsp ground black pepper, or to taste 1/2 tsp Thyme 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1/2 TBS Dried Chopped Onions Instructions: * Cut the wings into pieces. * Mix other ingredients into large pot and start simmering. * Add wings to pot to give flavor * Heat Oil to 350-375F degrees * Add wings to fryer and cook until done (12-14 minutes) * Add wings back to Buffalo sauce and coat thoroughly
